The Middle East has been one continuous string of people killing each other. According to 'The Iliad', the origins of western civilization started with the Trogon War. According to the 'Bible' the world only had four people when one killed another. Since then, regional groups have had a thousand names - Sumerians, Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Athenians, Spartans, Byzantines, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Sunnis, Shiites, Iranians, Iraqis, Hezbollah, Palestinians, Israelis, Libyans, Lebanese, the list goes on and on. The common thread is they have all killed each other and have been killed by the others at some point in time. No one in the region seems interesting in stopping anytime soon.
Except for the oil and the Holocaust, no one would care. The area is considered strategic to our 'National Interest' because of its oil and we have a commitment to the Jews because of guilt over inaction during the Holocaust. To both, I say, "It is past time". As for oil, we have alternative sources and we should be shifting away from oil anyway. Middle Eastern oil is by definition a finite resource. Once it runs out, the region will have no source of income and will crumble into disrepair and disaster anyway. We can buy it from whoever is selling it knowing full well they have bad to terrible records of humanity. As for the Jews, my parents were children during the Holocaust. It was not me who let Germany kill six million of them. It is not my problem to ensure the Jews' protection. The entire region - including the Jews - have had five thousand years to learn to get along with each other. If they haven't figured out how by now, the US is not going to teach them.
My cynical self wants to build the wall around the Middle East. Don't let anyone in or out. Drop enough small arms and ammunition so every person has an assault rifle, pistol, and plenty of rounds. One of two things will happen. They will either realize the futility of killing each other, or they will kill each other until only one is left standing. Probably the later. Either way, the region will finally have peace.
My pragmatic self says. "Leave the region". If Russia wants to get involved in their disputes, they can suffer the results of terrorist attacks against their soldiers and civilians.
